FASHFEST: Behind the scenes with Kira Pizzingrilli

September 20, 2016

FASHFEST is Canberra’s most glamorous, red carpet fashion event of the year. This year, it is a three day experience running six unique shows. FASHFEST cultivates modern, emerging fashion, design and creative talent on a Canberra stage for the world to see.

One of 40 designers showcasing their dynamic collections is Kira Pizzingrilli. Kira’s designs and textiles emerge from the central coast in New South Wales. She mixes feminine fabrics and prints with edgy and fashion-forward shapes. Her central coast roots are evident in her latest ‘Unearth’ collection which pays homage to 90s Aussie beach style and the raw beauty of Aussie bushland.

I caught up with Kira to see how this edgy collection came to life!

  1. How would you describe your label?

My brand’s style is a natural mix of feminine prints and fashion forward shapes, with a clever twist on classic tailoring. I enjoy experimenting with different textures and fabrics to create an interesting point of difference. My designs reflect a coastal lifestyle as I grew up on the Central Coast of NSW. All of the fabric prints I create myself to add to the creativity and originality of each collection.lacedress smallfile.jpg

  1. What is the inspiration behind your collection for FASHFEST?

‘Unearth’ S/S 2016 is derived from all things Australia. From the unassuming, raw beauty of the country’s bushland, to the 90’s Aussie beach style, this collection appeals to the nostalgia within us all. You can see references to this theme in the fabrics, from the Eucalyptus inspired print designs to the textured lace.

  1.  If you could get one celebrity to represent your brand, who would it be and why?

I would love to see Margot Robbie in my label. Not only does she have a fantastic sense of style but she also exudes confidence and seems to not take herself too seriously. It’s that down to earth attitude that I think appeals to my brand.

  1. What is your favourite accessory?

My positive attitude! Lol jk, my favourite and most worn accessory would be my braided black leather choker. It’s really thin and has a round gold charm at the front that just makes it a little bit special. It goes with everything and can do so much to compliment an outfit.

  1. What is your best style tip?

I love this quote from Alexa Chung- “Never say never when it comes to fashion, because you’ll be wearing never in two years time”. Which is so true, don’t be afraid to be adventurous in what you wear!

  1. What is it like being in the fashion industry?

In a few words- fun, challenging, rewarding, exciting. In a few more words- I love what I do, and like in any industry Australia is such a supportive community for independent businesses. We want to see each other succeed. It can be really challenging as an emerging designer, the greatest hurdle is getting your name out there and getting noticed. It’s a lot of hard work and definitely not always as glamorous as it seems. Although it does have its glamorous moments, and I’m sure FASHFEST will be one of them!
